College Hockey East is a collegiate club sports hockey league comprised of colleges and universities from the western Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. The goal of CHE is to offer a competitive league of collegiate hockey teams that provides standards, structure, regulates operation, and promotes sportsmanship on and off the ice. The majority of membership teams in CHE are members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA). The partnership CHE has with the ACHA allows our member teams the opportunity to compete for a national championship while maintaining nationally established standards for players and teams.

Congratulations to the 2008-09 CHE award winners. There are two non-player and four player awards in all recognizing outstanding achievement for on-ice and off-ice accomplishments. All recipients were acknowledged during the 2008-09 CHE Championship finals!
Goaltender of the Year: #31-Josh Gilliam, CUP-I: There were many solid contenders for the Goalie of the Year Award, as Josh Gilliam tied Jeff Frohm of Fredonia State and Mike Inman of Pitt-Johnstown with seven victories each. Gilliam wins the award based on a higher winning percentage, as Josh finished with a record of 7-0 in CHE play. Josh helped lead the high flying CUP-I Vulcan’s to the CHE North Division title and the Kaleina Cup for best overall record in CHE.
Jamison Roth Student-Athlete of the Year: #23-Jason Hosko, RMU D-III: Jason has tallied 13 goals, 20 assists and 8 PIM for the RMU D-III Hockey team. He was nominated to the 2008-2009 CHE All-Star game. Academically, Jason is a Jr. at RMU carrying 15 credits with a 3.6 GPA. He is a leader on and off the ice. He carries the image of RMU and the CHE high and keeps that in mind at all times. When Jason is not playing hockey, he and his brother own their own landscape and snow removal business. They started the company a few years ago and it continues today. Jason often volunteers feeding the homeless and skates for youth hockey programs.
Points Leader of the Year: #12-Ryan Jones, CUP-I: As the stats show, the points contest wasn’t even close, as no player was within 11 points of Ryan Jones. Ryan’s best performance came against Fredonia State on Oct 24th, where he scored two goals and three assists in CUP’s 8-7 OT, come from behind victory over North Division Rival Fredonia State. Jones was also an integral part of last year’s CHE and National Championship California team. Ryan’s strong play continued in the playoffs, when he notched six points in a 9-3 victory over Penn State Altoona.
Defenseman of the Year: #27-Nick Posa, CUP-I: Nick Posa has been the cornerstone of the CUP-I defensive corps this season. He was named to his first CHE All-Star Game in January, where he helped the North Division to an All-Star victory. Nick has tallied 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points, which lands him 3rd on the team in scoring. Through 11 CHE games this season, Nick scored 10 goals and added 10 assists. Those numbers make him the top-scoring defenseman in the CHE and among all league leaders in goals and points. Nick leads the team as a plus-11 while only taking 9 penalties all season.
Sam Kelly Head Coach of the Year: Chris Howard, Fredonia State: Chris is 24 years old and serving his first full-time season as head coach for the Blue Devil’s. In his first season as a full-time Head Coach in CHE, Chris leaded his team to the CHE Playoffs ranked #4 with a 9-3-1 league record. Despite losing in the first round of the CHE Playoffs, Chris will lead FSU in the ACHA D-III National Tournament. The Blue Devil’s secured their spot in Nationals after two victories at Regional Playoffs a few weeks ago in Philadelphia, PA. FSU currently hold a 19-5 overall record which is enough to capture the #3 seed in the ACHA D-III Atlantic Region. Chris is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia in May 2006 with a degree in Finance and Management.
Ed Bittner General manager of the Year: Deal Lakios, West Virginia D-II: Dean Lakios has been a part of the WVU Hockey organization for over a decade. He oversees the proper working order for two teams competing in the D-I and D-II levels of the ACHA. Dean currently sits as a member of the CHE Board of Directors and has been an integral part of the advancement of collegiate hockey for many years. Dean is a native of the Buckeye State and offers assistance for anything business matter that arises. When it comes to history and wisdom, look no further than Dean Lakios. His contributions to WVU Hockey and CHE will never be matched!!!
